A man who sped past police conducting an unrelated investigation in a Brentwood neighborhood, then fled the scene on foot when his car was stopped, was arrested Wednesday night and charged with a series of offenses, including drunken driving, police said.

Rafael Melendez, 23, of Claywood Drive, Brentwood, was arrested after a search of the area by a Suffolk County police aviation unit and a K-9 team. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, second-degree reckless endangerment and criminal mischief causing property damage — the last charge after he damaged a patrol car, police said.

Police said officers had responded to an unrelated call at Claywood and Oriole Place when, at about 9:20 p.m., Melendez came speeding through the neighborhood in a 2001 Nissan Sentra, almost striking several pedestrians. Police gave chase and stopped Melendez, who then jumped from the car and ran away on foot.

Melendez faces arraignment Thursday in First District Court in Central Islip.
