An armed robber fled with cash from a Valley Stream store just before 4 p.m. on Sunday and police searching for him looked in a Hewlett home, only to discover he had apparently escaped, Nassau police said.

A man entered Kidz Stuff on Rockaway Avenue, displayed a handgun from his waistband and demanded cash from the register, police said. He left the store with an undisclosed amount through the rear door, got into a vehicle believed to be a Ford Escape and fled, police said.

“Information received at the scene by responding officers and a subsequent investigation led them to an East Rockaway Road, Hewlett home where the subject was believed to be located,” police said in a news release early Tuesday.

“After obtaining entrance into the house and conducting a search of the residence, the subject was not found and is believed to have fled prior to police arrival,” the release said.
