Photo credit: Robert Garofalo | The driver of this Nissan Altima and his passenger were taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital early Sunday after the car hit a wooden utility pole, snapping it and causing it to fall on the car. The collision occurred about 4:40 a.m. on Blue Point Road near Buckley Avenue in Holtsville. The passenger was ejected, but the driver was trapped in the car, surrounded by live wires. Once the power was cut, it took Holtsville firefighters and Suffolk County police 40 minutes to free the driver using multiple hydraulic tools. (Feb. 12, 2012)

A Holtsville man was arrested early Sunday after he drove while intoxicated and crashed his car into a pole, seriously injuring himself and his passenger and causing live wires to drop onto the car, Suffolk police said.

Robert McDowell, 24, was driving a 2005 Nissan south on Blue Point Road near Buckley Road at 4:30 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle, striking a pole.
