An Atlantic Beach woman, who police said left the scene of a collision in Lawrence early Sunday, was charged with driving drunk with a 7-year-old girl in the car.
Giovanna Rupay, 43, of 111 Flamingo St., was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated with a child and leaving the scene of an accident. She was scheduled for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
Nassau County police said Rupay was driving a 2013 Honda Pilot shortly before 12:15 a.m. on the southbound lanes of the Nassau Expressway, Route 878, at Seagirt Boulevard just north of the Atlantic Beach Bridge when her SUV collided with a Dodge sedan.
Police said Rupay abandoned her vehicle and walked home with the child after the crash, but the male driver of the Dodge and female passenger remained on the scene and called police.
An investigation led to Rupay’s address, police went to her home and found her there, and took her back to the crash scene.
Police said it was determined that Rupay had been intoxicated while driving and had the girl in the car.
No injuries were reported.
Police declined to disclose Rupay’s relationship to the child.
