A Mastic Beach man was charged with reckless driving Sunday after he veered off the road into the woods in Yaphank, injuring himself and his passenger, Suffolk County Police said.

John DiOrio, 55, of Mastic Beach, was driving his 1993 Infinity Q45 at about 5:50 p.m. westbound on Sunrise Highway, just east of Yaphank Avenue, when he crashed, police said.

DiOrio was transported by South Country Ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue with serious injuries, officials said.

His passenger, Doreen Miller, 60, of Babylon, was also taken by South Country Ambulance to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries, officials said.

DiOrio was issued for summonses for unsafe speed, driving on the shoulder and unsafe lane change. He was given a field appearance ticket and will be arraigned at a later date, police said.
