A 40-year-old man was charged with attempted murder Sunday after Nassau police said he shot a woman in the chest during an argument at his New Cassel home.

Nassau County police said the incident, which occurred at about 11:30 a.m. Sunday, began inside Andre Danzy’s home on Hicks Street as “a verbal argument” between himself and a 20-year-old woman.

But, police said, at some point during that argument, Danzy “took a handgun and shot” the victim in the chest.

He then drove her to Nassau University Medical Center, but soon left. Police said the victim identified Danzy as the assailant.

Danzy was arrested by police on Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow a short time later. Police said Danzy was not in possession of the handgun when he was arrested, but said it was recovered later.

The victim was in stable condition Monday, police said.

The nature of the relationship between Danzy and the woman was not immediately known, according to police.

Police said in a statement Monday that details regarding the argument were “not available” at this time.

Danzy is charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree criminal use of a firearm and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

He was scheduled for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
