A Baldwin man has been charged in the death of a Pennsylvania man in a shooting on Saturday on a residential street, police said.
Homicide Squad detectives said Nathan Barnwell, 45, of 940 Woodoak Dr., was arrested in connection with the death of Winfield Gillespie, 39, from Pennsylvania.
Barnwell is charged with first-degree manslaughter, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and tampering with physical evidence. He is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in First District Court, Hempstead.
On Saturday, Det. Sgt. James Skopek of the Nassau County Police Department's homicide squad told reporters at the scene that police got a call reporting shots fired in front of the home on Woodoak Drive in Baldwin shortly before 1 a.m. Officers found Gillespie with a single gunshot wound, inflicted by a person he had apparently been arguing with, police said.
Gillespie was taken to South Nassau Communities Hospital in Oceanside, where he was pronounced dead about 5:25 a.m.
Skopek said police believe the argument preceded the shooting. He said at the time that investigators were interviewing a witness.
