Nassau police detectives are investigating a fatal shooting in Freeport Tuesday afternoon.

An unidentified man was shot and killed at a home on Frederick Avenue, police said. A second man was shot and survived, police said.

No arrests have been made.

Nassau Police Det. Capt. John Azzata said Freeport police received a call about the shooting at 11:51 a.m. One of the men was rushed to a hospital by authorities and died there a short time later. He is not a resident of the home.

The man who survived lives in the home. He is recovering at a hospital, Azzata said.

Azzata declined to say if investigators are looking for one or more suspects.

“This is not a random act of violence,” Azzata said. “We believe they were targeted.”

Residents of the block said it’s a quiet neighborhood where acts of violence are rare.

“As a parent, it scares me,” said Melissa Palacios, whose 10-year-old daughter was dropped off by a school bus just outside the crime scene Tuesday afternoon. “Two people shot on our street. That worries me a lot. It makes me think it’s not safe.”

James Gabel, 42, said he knows one man who lives in the home and calls the residents who live there “good people.”

He said he does not know if the man he knows is one of the two who was shot.

“I’ve lived here going on 10 years and never saw any trouble there,” says Gabel, who lives eight houses away. “That’s always been a nice house, good people, as far as I know. I’m trying to wrap my head around this.”

Calls to relatives of the property owner of the home where the men were shot were not returned.
