Police have released sketches of two men wanted in connection with a November shooting in Dix Hills that left a 27-year-old Virginia man critically injured.
The shooting occurred on Melrose Road just after 9:15 p.m. Nov. 21, Suffolk County police said.
Police identified the victim as Louis Speaight, of Norfolk, and said that he was transported via Dix Hills Fire Department Rescue ambulance to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, where he was initially listed in critical condition after being shot in the chest. The status of his recovery was not known on Friday.
The owner of the home, Richard Schmoll, 61, told Newsday in November that the victim was a family friend and that he took one look through the glass door panel and shouted in alarm.
“I was right next to him, and he yelled at me, ‘Call 911!’ And then the guy shot through he door,” Schmoll said.
Schmoll said then that an unknown man, now believed to be one of the suspects, had come to the door hours earlier asking for someone who he said was unknown to his family. “We said, ‘We don’t know that person,’ and he looked down at his phone and said, ‘Well, I must have the wrong address,’ and then he took off,” Schmoll said, adding: “And then apparently he came back.”
He didn’t think the family friend knew the gunman.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-8477. All calls to Crime Stoppers will remain confidential, police said, and callers are eligible for a cash reward of up to $5,000 for any information leading to an arrest in the case.
