One of the officers smelled marijuana as he approached the car and another officer saw marijuana cigarettes in the rear of the vehicle, police said.

Officers said they eventually found 31 bags of marijuana and the vials of concentrate, which is smoked with a vaporizer. Police would not specify the amount of the marijuana.

Martinez faced charges of fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth-degree criminal possession of marijuana, and multiple vehicle and traffic violations, police said.

At his arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead on Tuesday, Martinez was ordered held on $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond. He is due back in court on Thursday.
