Four people — including a man who hit numerous highway markers and signs after his vehicle drove off the Long Island Expressway near the Exit 72 off-ramp — were arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, Riverhead Town police said Sunday.

The arrests were part of a Stop DWI enforcement effort by Riverhead police that will continue throughout the Fourth of July weekend and summer and into the year-end holiday season, police said.

The four face DWI charges after their arrests between late Saturday night and early Sunday at either checkpoints or as a result of stepped-up patrols by Riverhead police officers, officials said.

The defendants were identified by police as Juan C. Guiterrez, of Fredrick Street in Stamford, Connecticut, also allegedly involved in the LIE crash; Gambino Ruiz Coz, 47, of Priscilla Avenue, Riverhead; Jorge Garcia Aguilar, 31, of Segal Avenue, also in Riverhead; and Leopoldo Ferrufino, 50, of Old Quogue, Flanders.
