A Rocky Point man was charged in New Jersey with drug possession and putting a child in danger, Newark police said Wednesday.

Officers were patrolling the Oscar Miles Village housing complex about 1 p.m. Saturday when they noticed Jacob Vandijk, 28, in a parked vehicle with what appeared to be a hypodermic needle, police said.

They saw a 3-year-old child in a child seat in the back of the vehicle and found glassine envelopes containing what they suspect is heroin, along with needles, authorities said.

Vandijk was charged with possession of a controlled, dangerous substance; possession of drug paraphernalia; and endangering the welfare of a child.

The toddler was taken to a hospital for evaluation, police said.
