A woman who abandoned her animals — including a dog that died — in her South Huntington apartment faces animal cruelty charges, Suffolk County police said.
Melissa Buchanan, 27, of Beverly Road, was released on $2,000 cash bail Friday after being arraigned on six counts of animal cruelty under the New York State agricultural law, police said.
Buchanan’s landlord called police after hearing a dog bark repeatedly and after realizing she had not seen her tenant for a few days, police said in a news release.
When police arrived at the residence at about 9 p.m. Thursday, they found two miniature Australian shepherd dogs, two lizards and a cat — all of which had not been cared for, the release said.
One of the dogs was dead, police said.
Buchanan returned to the apartment when police were there and “admitted to police she had not been home for several days,” the release said.
The Town of Huntington Animal Control Division took the surviving dog and cat. The Suffolk County SPCA has made arrangements for the care of the lizards, police said.
Buchanan could not be reached Friday afternoon.
