High school rankings

It seems that there are a lot of these lists out there ranking the best high schools across the country. US News & World Report released its ranking this week and four Long Island schools were on the list.

But, as Hofstra education professor Alan Singer points out: these are all wealthy districts that have educationally advantaged students. Is there a benefit to ranking high schools? In New York, we already have the school report card that looks at so many parameters when it comes to public education. And New York is such a unique state, should a New York City public school be compared to a suburban district?
