Trooper James R. Gohery died while on duty in the Village of Freeport. Gohery was assigned to relay evidence to the Wantagh station and as he traveled through the Village of Freeport, the evidence slipped from his grasp. In an attempt to recover it, he lost control of his motorcycle, brushed against a tree and fell, striking his head. He was stationed at the Bethpage and Wantagh Stations of Troop "L."

Trooper Lewis, an 11-year veteran of the State Police, died instantly when his open touring car went off Route 27 near the Village of Montauk and overturned. At the time of his death, Lewis was assigned to Bethpage Park and to patrol Route 27. It was during his return from the far eastern section of his patrol area that the accident happened.

Trooper Cunningham, a four-year veteran of the State Police, died when the open touring car he was operating left the Wantagh Parkway near Jones Beach and struck an abutment, ejecting him onto the highway where he died instantly from head injuries. Cunningham was stationed at in Valley Stream at the time of his death.

Trooper MacLarnon, a four-year veteran of the State Police, was killed instantly as he crossed the Southern State Parkway after he parked his motorcycle on the highway shoulder and was walking toward a fixed post when he was struck by a vehicle traveling west. MacLarnon was assigned to Bethpage at the time of his death.

Sweeney was assigned to the Jones Beach detail and was the first member of the State Police assigned to the newly established Troop L to die in the line of duty.

Trooper Lane, a six-year veteran of the State Police, was interviewing an area patrolman at the station concerning vandalism to construction equipment on the Wantagh Parkway. The Bethpage Station was on the second floor of a store front office and when Trooper Lane leaned against the banister, he lost his balance and fell to the ground.

Trooper Dobbs died from complications brought about by injuries sustained in a earlier motorcycle accident in Mineola. Dobbs was on routine patrol when he was struck by a truck that had passed a stop sign and entered Jericho Turnpike in front of him. He lost his leg to surgical amputation and later succumbed to infection and pneumonia.
