Mattituck: Cool and corny

Local ice cream makers revel in summer fruit. The arrivals of the strawberries and the peaches are reasons for anyone to reap the harvest.

The Magic Fountain, the ice cream maven of Mattituck, ups the ante with a couple of unusual, seasonal contributions. No, not goat cheese or chocolate chili, which they also make.

Pictured above is sweet corn ice cream. Yes, those are little kernels in there. It's a much better use of the vegetable to provide something sweet than giving the consumer any more high fructose corn syrup. It's creamy, lush, buttery, vanillacentric, very good.

Not to limit itself to one of the East End's big crops, The Magic Fountain also has come up with lavender ice cream. The color and aroma, of course, delightful. The flavor: slightly herbal, diverting, well worth a scoop.

While on the subject of lavender,  don't forget a visit to Lavender By the Bay in East Marion. Your nose will let you know when you're near.

The Magic Fountain is at 9825 Main Rd. (Route 25), Mattituck; 631-298-4908. And keep going east for Lavender By the Bay, at 7540 Main Rd., East Marion; 631-477-1019.
