From a mother's love, a lifesaving gift

Karen Acompora and her family founded the Louis J. Acompora Foundation to raise awareness for access to automated external defibrillators, AEDs, after her 14-year-old son died of cardiac arrest in 2000. Louis' Law, enacted in 2002, requires the devices to be placed in New York public schools. Karen, who heads the Northport-based nonprofit, has honored Louis' memory in various ways. One such project includes a partnership to place AEDs in 140 group homes run by another nonprofit on Long Island.
