Captain’s Cove and the Garvies Point esplanade area in Glen Cove have been closed to the public indefinitely, the city’s industrial development agency announced.

The closure on Friday was implemented for work at the site before the planned construction of 1,110 units of housing as well as parks and commercial development by Uniondale-based RXR Realty. Newsday in August reported that state and federal officials have said that environmental remediation of the former industrial site is expected to be completed within months.

The closures are necessary for public safety, according to a news release. The boat ramp at the Hempstead Harbor Club will remain open but parts of the waterfront area will be fenced in and only accessible to authorized personnel.

Glen Cove spokeswoman Lisa Travatello said that dog owners who used the area to walk their animals could instead use Big Ralph’s Park off Kelly Street or Dennis Brian Murray Park on Leech Circle South.
