Huntington man who saved 3
in boat accident is thanked
Councilman Stuart Besen and his fellow Board Members recently honored Scott Stokkers of Huntington for his heroic actions, which ultimately saved the lives of three people. On the evening of Saturday, Aug. 15, a casual fishing expedition turned fatal when a 10-foot aluminum boat capsized sending its four occupants into the waters of the Long Island Sound. Scott Stokkers of Huntington was out fishing in his canoe off Makamah Beach when he heard the cries for help. Stokkers navigated his canoe towards three helpless victims using only the sound of their voices to guide him through the moonless night. One by one Scott pulled these three survivors into his canoe, mindful of the potential tipping risks associated with such a feat and adding to his heroic effort by successfully getting all three safely onboard and ashore. “Scott Stokkers is to be honored and commended for his heroic lifesaving actions on that fateful night,” Besen said. “Mr. Stokkers’s resourceful, quick thinking efforts were instrumental in saving the lives of three people, averting what could have been a tragic loss to family, friends and community.” Stephen Jimenez works for the Town of Huntington.
