The Suffolk Police and Smithtown Fire Department responded to a serious accident west bound on Route 347 west of Helen Avenue on Wednesday October 29, 2014 at 8:50. A late model Lexus apparently lost control, hit a tree trapping the lone male diver. Firefighters and police used hydraulic rescue equipment to extricate the driver. Smithtown fire department ambulance transported the driver in critical condition to Stony Brook University hospital. Westbound traffic on Route 347 was closed from Terry Road while police conducted an investigation into the cause.(Credit: Joseph C. Sperber)
