BALDWIN/Woman hit in crosswalk dies of injuries

A pedestrian injured in a Wednesday night accident on Grand Avenue in Baldwin has died, Nassau County police said Thursday.

Evelyn Ramos-Coto, 33, was hit by a vehicle while she was in a marked crosswalk, headed across Grand Avenue from west to east shortly before 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

She had still been conscious as emergency workers took her from the accident scene but she was pronounced dead a short time later by hospital staff, at 6:49 p.m., police said.

The accident happened as she walked across the southbound left lane of Grand Avenue, at Lorenz Avenue. She was hit by a southbound 2001 Ford driven by a 37-year-old man, police said. The driver's name was not made public and no charges were filed.

In a separate accident, in Suffolk County, reported at 6:26 p.m. Wednesday, a teenage boy was still in serious condition yesterday after he was hit by a sport utility vehicle in West Babylon, police said. The accident happened on Straight Path near 12th Street in West Babylon, and the victim was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip.

HEMPSTEAD/Police ID man Wednesday shooting victim

A 29-year-old man who was shot to death Wednesday night in Hempstead was identified Thursday as James Warren.

Hempstead police responding to a shots fired call at 6 p.m. in the rear of 600 Fulton Ave. found Warren, of Hempstead "lying on the sidewalk," police said Thursday in a news release.

Warren was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later, police said.
