John Romanelli was in critical condition Friday at Stony Brook University Medical Center after he was burned when a hose off-loading biofuel ruptured, igniting a flash fire, Southold Town Police said. One firefighter was injured at a fire Saturday at the Veterans of Foreign Wars hall on Merrick Road in Lynbrook. Firefighters from Lynbrook, Malverne and Rockville Centre used saws on the roof to vent the hot gases and smoke; the fire was brought under control within an hour. (Dec. 24, 2011)

Officials say a fire appeared to have started in the escalator motor between the first and second floors inside the store which had to be evacuated because it filled with smoke. No injuries were reported and the fire is not considered to be suspicious.

Heavy fire was visible when the fire department arrived on scene of this vacant home on Bourdois Avenue off Atlantic Avenue in Bellport. The Bellport and North Patchogue fire departments assisted in bringing the blaze under control. The SCPD Arson Squad is investigating the cause of the fire. No injuries were reported. (Dec. 8, 2011)

A collection of pet birds are thought to have perished Saturday night in this Massapequa Park fire. Firefighters answering a call to the Second Avenue residence about 10 p.m. found the fire in the room with the birds. It was under control in about 30 minutes. The occupant was taken to a hospital with injuries that were described as not serious. The fire is being investigated. Units from Massapequa, South Farmingdale and North Massapequa fire departments assisted. (Dec. 3, 2011)

The Lakeland Fire Department responds to downed power lines on Port Avenue off Johnson Avenue in Ronkonkoma Tuesday afternoon. The wires were live when the firefighters arrived and kept them from extinguishing the blaze that had consumed one vehicle and heavily damaged a second. After LIPA arrived to cut the downed wires, the fire was quickly bought under control. (Nov. 29, 2011)

The driver said she was pulling out of her driveway about 12:30 a.m. when she noticed the fire in the engine compartment. Although firefighters were on the scene quickly and had the fire extinguished in about 10 minutes, the car was destroyed. (Nov. 29, 2011)

A tow truck burst into flames before dawn Tuesday morning on Marconi Boulevard near North Strongs Avenue in Copiague. The Copiague Fire Department arrived to find the tow truck in flames. The two occupants reported that as they were driving they noticed smoke and pulled over before the truck ignited. The fire was under control in about 15 minutes. (Nov. 29, 2011)
