Mary Re was born Oct. 2, 1912, in Brooklyn. She is the fifth child of Guiseppa and Gaspare Accardi, who immigrated to Brooklyn from Alcamo, Sicily. Mary, who married Luigi Italo Re in 1934, was widowed after 59 years. Mary belonged to the International Ladies Garment Workers of America. She worked in factories in Brooklyn making doll clothes for Madame Alexander and Effanbee dolls. She lived in Canarsie, where she raised her sons. In 1995 she moved to Smithtown to live with her youngest son and his family. She was an active member of the Smithtown Senior Citizens Center, where she enjoyed ceramic painting. Mary has lived at the Mills Pond Nursing Facility in St. James since 2005. She has three sons, Joseph, Gaspare and Louis; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mary celebrated her birthday at Mills Pond.
