Jennifer and Brian Byrne of East Meadow met at work. Jennifer tells their story and why May has special meaning for them.

I was working at an insurance brokerage firm in Manhattan when Brian joined the staff in January 2006. We worked closely together on several projects and became friends. He was 32, and I was 26, and our birthdays were in May.

I had been telling my girlfriends all along how much I really liked Brian. That May, one of them suggested I ask him to join us for drinks after work. Brian was taking evening courses at Baruch College but canceled his class to meet us. My friends liked him, too. That night, Brian asked me out to dinner, and we started dating. We both lived in Queens.

We didn't tell anyone at work we were dating until two months later, when we showed up together at a company party. Everyone said, "Yup, we knew it!"

Things moved along, and in May 2010 we purchased a home in East Meadow. The following year, I got a feeling that Brian was going to pop the question when he started taking his phone calls in another room -- he'd never done that before -- and I'd hear him say, "No, not yet." I found out Brian had asked my father for permission to marry me when I was not around.

In May, we planned a vacation to Mexico, and the night before we left we were going out to dinner. As I came down the staircase, Brian was standing at the bottom of the stairs with our two little dogs sitting on either side of him. In his hands was an open box with an engagement ring.

He wanted to propose in Mexico but thought getting through airport security might be a problem.

We were married this year on my birthday, May 18, at St. Raphael's Roman Catholic Church in East Meadow, followed by a reception at Watermill Caterers in Smithtown. I was given away by my parents, and Brian was escorted by his parents. He surprised me with a birthday cake at our reception; we honeymooned in Hawaii for two weeks.

I work in compliance at an investment banking firm, and Brian is a consultant at an advisory firm, both in Manhattan. We are expecting our first child in February.
