The Long Island Rail Road is adjusting its schedule for the upcoming holiday, adding new trains on multiple lines in anticipation of heavy traffic.

On Thursday, Christmas Eve, trains will be operating on a mostly normal schedule, with 13 “getaway” trains added between 12:43 p.m. and 3:48 p.m. Those additional trains will run between Penn Station and stops on the Babylon, Far Rockaway, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Ronkonkoma lines.

On Christmas Day, LIRR trains will run on a holiday schedule, according to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s website.

Additional trains will also be in service for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day to accommodate heavy traffic. On Dec. 31, 13 extra trains will run eastbound from Penn Station from 12:43 p.m. and 3:48 p.m. for those looking to start the holiday weekend early. The MTA is adding 20 westbound trains for those trying to get to New York City for celebrations.

After 12:30 a.m., 20 additional trains will run back out onto the Island. The trains will start at Penn Station and Atlantic Terminal at about 12:35 a.m. and run to Babylon, Long Beach, Montauk, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Ronkonkoma until 4:19 a.m.
