The Mega Millions winning numbers for the $425 million jackpot were: 19, 24, 26, 27, 70 and Mega Ball 12.

The second-largest Mega Millions jackpot jumped to $425 million, less than 12 hours before Friday's drawing, according to the New York Lottery's website.

The jackpot for the 11 p.m. drawing increased from $400 million, lottery officials said. In most cases, such jackpot jumps are because of better-than-expected sales.

In the Mega Millions game, Friday's payoff trails only the $656-million jackpot -- the U.S. record for the largest lottery prize -- on March 30, 2012.

A winning ticket matching all six numbers provides a prize of a full jackpot in 30 annual payments or a cash option of $228.2 million before taxes.

Overall, Friday's prize is the fifth largest among U.S. lottery jackpots, behind Powerball jackpots of $590.5 million on May 18, 2013; $587.5 million on Nov. 28, 2012; and $448.4 million on Aug. 7, 2013.
