Two Hempstead cousins face murder charges in last week's fatal stabbing of a third Hempstead man, Nassau County police said Sunday.

Manuel Antonio Gavarrete, 20, and Jose Lisandro Gavarrete, 32, were arrested over the weekend and charged with second-degree murder in the Wednesday slaying of Herzon Alvarado, 23, who was also known as Jose Gutierrez, police said.

Alvarado was stabbed in the torso during a fight near Main and West Columbia streets in Hempstead, police said. He was pronounced dead at a hospital, they said.

Police Sunday said they did not know what the fight was about and said they did not know what, if any, relationship Alvarado had with the Gavarretes.

Manuel Antonio Gavarrete was arrested Saturday night and arraigned Sunday in First District Court in Hempstead, police said.

Jose Lisandro Gavarrete was arrested early Sunday and was to be arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead Monday, police said.

The investigation into this case is ongoing and police asked that anyone with additional information contact Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
