One person is dead after a three-car crash in Hempstead Village Thursday afternoon, and another is seriously injured, Hempstead police said.

A 75-year-old man died hours after the 3:47 p.m. accident at Peninsula Boulevard and President Street, but police declined to identify him, pending notification of the family. A 72-year-old woman, who was traveling with the man, was seriously injured and taken to Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, police said.

Two other people were taken to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

One vehicle flipped over in the three-car pileup, which happened after the driver of one of the cars tried to make a left turn onto President Street from Peninsula Boulevard and cut in front of another car. Nassau County detectives are also investigating.

Police had temporarily closed that section of Peninsula Boulevard during the investigation, but it has since been reopened.
