Nassau County police are searching for five men who they said tried to rob a man as he walked down a Freeport street on Saturday evening.

Police said the victim, a 39-year-old man, was walking west on Leonard Avenue at 6:35 p.m. when the five men came out of the bushes at Hope Place and Leonard Avenue and demanded that he empty his pockets.

The victim then ran east on Leonard Avenue, but the suspects gave chase and caught him by Rogers Place, police said.

One of the men hit the victim in the face with a tree branch before the five ran away, police said.
