The Nassau County Arson Bomb Squad was investigating a house fire in Garden City early Sunday that left four firefighters injured and the home severely damaged.
Police said an Andover Court resident was watching television at 2:14 a.m. when he smelled smoke inside his home.
When he looked outside, the man, 41, saw that a patio swing was engulfed in flames, police said. The man tried to put out the flames using a fire extinguisher, but the fire spread to the house, police said.
About 120 firefighters and equipment went to the fire, including departments from Garden City, Mineola, Franklin Square, New Hyde Park, Stewart Manor, Westbury and Carle Place, police said.
While fighting the blaze, a Westbury firefighter slipped on a patch of ice and was taken to a hospital with a broken wrist and a shoulder injury, police said. Three Garden City firefighters were injured, and they refused medical treatment at the scene, according to police.
The house has severe fire damage, but the resident was not injured.
Police said the investigation is continuing.
