The body of the paddleboarder recovered Friday from the Atlantic Ocean 22 miles south of Jones Inlet has been identified as an Atlantic Beach man who had been missing for several days, Nassau police said.
On Sunday, Gary Turkel, 41, set out on his paddleboard at about 6:15 p.m.; the Coast Guard called off its search for him on Tuesday afternoon.
A boater on Friday made an emergency call at about 6:45 a.m., reporting finding the body of a man in the ocean.
The Coast Guard dispatched a 47-foot motor lifeboat from Station Jones Beach and made the recovery, then transported the body back to the Jones Beach station — where it was transferred to Nassau police.
The water temperature when Turkel was last seen was in the mid-to-upper 50s — perhaps about 56 to 58 degrees, according to the National Data Buoy Service.
The survival rate under such conditions is anywhere from two to about 40 hours, the Coast Guard said, depending on exposure.
Turkel, still attached to his paddleboard when found, was not wearing a life jacket.
