Nassau police said a burglar crashed a Hempstead Town-owned vehicle into a fence at Uniondale's Greenfield Cemetery early Sunday morning and was attempting to steal another vehicle when he was confronted by town public safety officers.

An alarm alerted the officers to the cemetery's administrative building at 650 Nassau Road about 3:13 a.m., police said.

A responding public safety lieutenant found a male — described as appearing to be about 15 years old and wearing a red hoodie, tan pants and white sneakers — inside a town-owned 2011 Chevy Van. The suspect exited the van and fled the cemetery on foot, police said.

But police found a 2009 Ford crashed into a south interior fence of the cemetery and the administration building had three broken windows. Additionally, three town-owned buses were opened and fire extinguishers were removed but found on the grounds.

Nassau detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
