A gas station store clerk became the victim of an assault late Friday night in Roosevelt when he tried to use a stick to defend his co-worker against a group of young men, police said.

Nassau County detectives said five or six men between the ages of 18 and 25 years old began arguing with a male employee of the Foodmart gas station at 284 W. Centennial Ave. about 10:30 p.m.

The second employee, a 20-year-old man, grabbed a stick from behind the counter and approached the group, telling them to leave the store, police said.

One subject took the stick from the employee and struck him in the head causing a laceration, police said. The subjects fled the store in three unidentified vehicles northbound on Brookside Avenue, police said.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment of his injuries, police said.

Detectives request anyone with information about the assault to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.
