A man and woman were arrested after calling 911 to report their car had been damaged by a gas station attendant -- who police said had fought them off when they attacked him Sunday in Malverne Park.
Lapourcha Castro, 21, of 611 Bellmore Ave., East Meadow, and Corey Deas, 22, of 459 South Long Beach Ave., Freeport, were arrested and charged with second-degree robbery after they returned to the scene of the crime to report the damage to officers, Nassau County police said.
A third suspect did not return with Castro and Deas and is still being sought, police said.
The incident occurred about 4:45 p.m. Sunday at the USA gas station on Hempstead Avenue.
Police said the trio pulled into the station in a Nissan Altima and asked the 58-year-old attendant for $20 worth of gas.
He notified them that the credit card they were attempting to use had been declined.
Police said at that point a woman, Castro, threatened the attendant with a box cutter and Deas, a man, threw the attendant to the ground and "began to punch him about the head and face."
The victim was able to grab a walking stick, police said, and used it to damage the driver's side door of the Nissan.
After fleeing the scene, police said the suspects called 911 to report the incident -- and two returned to the scene to talk to police, who arrested them. Police would not say if the third suspect was a man or a woman.
The victim suffered a lacerated knee, but declined medical treatment.
Castro and Deas face arraignment Monday in First District Court in Hempstead.
