A Uniondale man was arrested Tuesday for leaving the scene of an accident in Hempstead last month, Nassau police said.

Police said Kenechukwu Okoli, 59, was driving a 1997 Mercedes-Benz north on Henry Street about 7:55 a.m. on Nov. 20 when he stopped in front of a Village of Hempstead police crossing guard who was helping children cross the street.

Okoli stopped at the cross walk, but then "decided to keep going," and clipped the side of the crossing guard's leg, a Nassau police spokeswoman said. Okoli kept driving and left the scene, police said.

After an investigation, police arrested Okoli at his home on Campus Street on Tuesday. He is charged with third-degree assault and leaving the scene of an accident. He is scheduled to be arraigned Jan. 7 at First District Court in Hempstead, police said.
