A Bay Shore man was impaired by alcohol Thursday when he hit an overpass on the Northern State Parkway, seriously injuring his front-seat passenger, who was ejected from the vehicle, State Police said.
Steven Gonzales was driving east on the parkway at about 7:30 a.m., near the border of Hicksville and Jericho, when his 2008 Jeep Commander veered to the right shoulder and struck the face of the Cantiague Rock Road overpass, police said.
The front-seat passenger, Marilyn Acosta Turcios-Velasquez, 20, of Brentwood, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected. She was airlifted to the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow with head and chest trauma, police said.
"According to multiple eyewitness accounts," Gonzales was driving "in an erratic manner eastbound on the Northern State Parkway" when his vehicle left the road, police said in a news release.
Turcios-Velasquez's condition has been upgraded from critical to stable, and she remained in the intensive care unit, a hospital spokeswoman Friday said. Turcios-Velasquez is expected to be moved from intensive care to a medical floor later Friday, the spokeswoman said.
Gonzales, 21, is charged with driving while his ability was impaired by alcohol, an unsafe lane change, reckless driving and other vehicle and traffic charges, police said.
He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
The single-car crash happened about 7:30 a.m. between Exit 34, Brush Hollow Road in Jericho, and Exit 35, Route 106/107 in Hicksville, State Police said.
The road was closed for more than five hours as authorities investigated the crash. All eastbound lanes of the parkway were reopened at 12:38 p.m.
