A Bethpage man was killed early Wednesday when the car he was driving submarined beneath the trailer portion of a tractor trailer exiting a parking lot.

The accident occurred at 12:35 a.m. near the intersection of South Broadway and South Oyster Bay Road in Bethpage.

Nassau County police said driver Robert Coiro, 43, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Coiro was driving his 2005 Mercury southbound on South Broadway, Route 107, when the car submarined the tractor trailer, which was pulling from a parking lot crossing the roadway, headed northeast.

The driver of the tractor trailer was not injured and has not been charged. The investigation is continuing, police said.

The crash was one of two serious accidents that occurred in Bethpage on Wednesday.

The second crash occurred about 4:50 a.m., when, police said, a 2007 Honda traveling south on Hicksville Road left the roadway and hit a telephone pole at Ludwig Lane.

Police said the driver was ejected and is listed in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

The vehicle, which had been reported stolen in New York City earlier, was impounded.

The investigation is ongoing, and police ask that anyone with information call Crime Stoppers at 800-244-8477. All calls will be kept confidential.
