He crashed his car through a fence outside a home in Bethpage on Thursday, kicked in the front door and, armed with a table leg he brought, beat an acquaintance inside the house, Nassau County police said.
Then, police said, Albert C. Garfield, 47, fled the scene, stole a 2007 Kia from a woman waiting to have it serviced at a car dealership in East Meadow and crashed it into another vehicle in North Massapequa before being arrested.
Now Garfield, of 12 Hunter Lane, Levittown, faces charges of first-degree burglary, second-degree assault, third-degree grand larceny, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and driving while ability impaired by drugs, police said.
Court records show Garfield has more than a dozen-and-a-half convictions dating to 1987 and was arrested in 2011 for an armed robbery in which he also impersonated a law enforcement officer. Records indicate his next scheduled court appearance on those charges -- and, in three other cases -- is April 25.
Police said that on Thursday Garfield went to a home on Hahn Avenue in Bethpage shortly after 8 a.m. Thursday, plowed his car through a driveway fence, kicked in the door and beat a 50-year-old man inside, causing "multiple contusions and abrasions" to the victim.
Police would only say the victim was an "acquaintance" of Garfield and did not say what sparked the assault. The victim, whose identity was not released, was taken to a hospital for head injuries, police said.
At about 10 a.m., police said Garfield approached a woman, 50, waiting to have her car serviced at Auto World on Hempstead Turnpike and stole her Kia, fleeing eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike. But, police said, Garfield crashed the Kia into another vehicle on Hicksville Road at the entrance ramp to Southern State Parkway in North Massapequa.
Officers determined Garfield was under the influence of drugs, police said. He was arrested and taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was treated for unspecified injuries and arrested.
Garfield faces arraignment Friday in First District Court in Hempstead.
