Cops: Man attacked with machete in New Cassel

A 50-year-old man was slashed with a machete in New Cassel on Saturday morning as he fought off a suspect who was attempting to steal his bicycle, Nassau County police said.

The assault occurred shortly after 2 a.m. after the victim parked his bike in front of 755 Old Country Rd.

Police said the unidentified male suspect got on the bike and attempted to ride away, but the victim confronted him and the two fought. The victim was able to retrieve the bike, but the suspect, armed with a machete, tracked him down on Arlington Street and Oliver Avenue.

The suspect then demanded the bicycle and struck the victim with the weapon, causing a cut to his right forearm, police said. The victim lost control of the bicycle and struck a parked car, chipping his tooth, authorities said.

The subject then entered a white van and fled the scene without the bike, police said. The victim refused medical assistance.

The suspect is described as about 25 years old and 5-foot-9 with brown hair and wearing a white T-shirt and beige shorts.
