Cops: Man fled after stealing, crashing car

A 32-year-old Great Neck man was arrested Tuesday night after he stole a car from a 7-Eleven parking lot, was involved in a crash a few blocks away and then tried to flee the scene on foot, police said.

Nassau County police said Omar Nunez, of 100 Steamboat Rd., faces charges of driving while intoxicated in addition to third-degree grand larceny, two counts of first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident without reporting, unlicensed operator and imprudent speed. He faces arraignment Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.

The incident occurred at 9:20 p.m. in New Hyde Park, after police said a 20-year-old man left the engine of his 2002 Honda running as he ran into the 7-Eleven on New Hyde Park Road. While the victim was in the store, police said Nunez took the car.

The victim called 911, police said, and a Nassau Highway Patrol Bureau officer almost immediately spotted the car traveling in the opposite direction on New Hyde Park Road and made a U-turn to follow it.

By that time, police said, Nunez had been involved in a collision with two other vehicles and had fled on foot.

Police said he was arrested after a foot pursuit.
