A Uniondale man was arrested Sunday, charged with leaving the scene of an earlier fatal accident in Hempstead, Nassau County police said.

Police said the victim, a 39-year-old pedestrian, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:10 a.m. -- almost 1 1/2 hours after the accident occurred on Fulton Avenue. Police were alerted when a passerby saw the body more than an hour after the accident and called 911.

Juan Santos, 42, of 584 Southern Pkwy., was charged with leaving the scene of an incident without reporting it. His bail was set at $50,000 cash or $100,000 bond at Monday's arraignment in First District Court in Hempstead.

Police said Santos was driving a 1999 Chevrolet pickup truck when he struck the victim, whose identity was not releasing pending notification to the family.

Santos was arrested at 12:40 p.m. Sunday after police said he was spotted in the area by a witness, who called police.
