Nassau County police arrested a man on a personal watercraft in Island Park on Saturday after he tossed a bag of cocaine into the water as police tried to pull him over, they said.

Police on Nassau County Marine Boat 5 said they saw David J. Gotterup, 33, of Oceanside, speeding through Reynolds Channel on a 2012 Sea-Doo personal watercraft at 7:45 p.m.

When police tried to stop Gotterup, they said he tossed a clear resealable plastic bag into the water. Police retrieved the bag, which they said appeared to contain cocaine.

Gotterup was arrested and charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and numerous boating violations. At his arraignment on Sunday at First District Court in Hempstead, Gotterup was ordered held on $1,000 cash bail or bond, which he posted. He is due back in court on Wednesday.
