A man lit himself on fire at an Oceanside gas station Thursday night and was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, a fire official said.

Nassau County police said the man was 25 but did not release additional information Friday morning.

“It looked like he just took the nozzle out, covered himself in gasoline and lit himself on fire,” said Oceanside Fire Chief John Madden.

In flames, the unidentified man ran from the Sunoco station on Long Beach Road at about 11:10 p.m. while the fuel he had spilled by the pump burned, the chief said.

Bystanders ran after him with a fire extinguisher from the gas station, putting out the flames before firefighters arrived, Madden said.

The gas station clerk used another fire extinguisher to put out the flames on the ground, the fire chief said.

An employee of the gas station would not comment.

The victim was taken to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow with burns on 90 percent of his body, Madden said.

There was no vehicle at the gas station, so it was unclear whether the man had walked there or parked nearby, the fire chief said.

The fire marshal’s office and police are investigating.
