A man who got out of his car after getting a flat tire during Thursday’s morning rush hour was struck and killed by a tractor trailer on the Long Island Expressway in Old Westbury, Nassau County police said.

Mark K. Feldman, 54, of Sands Point, died at the scene near Exit 39.

“He had a flat tire,” said Det. Lt. Richard LeBrun, a police spokesman. “He got out of the vehicle and was struck” by a U.S. Postal Service truck.

Feldman was hit at 4:55 a.m. after pulling his vehicle onto the right shoulder and getting out, police said.

LeBrun said the road is curved where Feldman stopped, a factor that may have affected the truck driver’s ability to see him.

The driver of the postal truck remained at the scene, police said.

“At this point, there does not appear to be any criminality,” LeBrun said.

Police said the investigation is continuing.

All lanes of the expressway were shut as police investigated; it was reopened after 5 1⁄2 hours, shortly after 10 a.m. For most of the morning, state traffic cameras showed vehicles backed up for several exits.
