A motorist was injured Thursday afternoon when shots were fired from another vehicle on the Southern State Parkway in Malverne, state police said.
Police would not say how the motorist was injured.
The victim, a man, called 911 and told police the other vehicle fired shots at about 12:45 p.m. before continuing westbound, between Exit 17 Hempstead Avenue and Exit 16 North, which is Franklin Avenue, state police said.
State police shut down the westbound parkway for about 20 minutes, and traffic backed up at least two exits, police said.
An investigator on the case said police are trying to piece together what happened, including how many shots were fired and whether others were injured.
“We’re still investigating, we’re still trying to get to the bottom of it,” State Police Investigator Heather Sinkowitz said.
Police want to look into the victim’s past and clarify conflicting descriptions of the shooter’s vehicle, she said.
Sinkowitz declined to release other details, saying more information would likely be released Friday.
Investigators ask anyone with information to call 631-756-3300.
