A Nassau County police officer suffered a fractured finger Wednesday night in the arrest of a Freeport man who fled an East Meadow store after stealing two pairs of sweatpants, police said.

According to Nassau police, Espinosa was seen concealing two pairs of sweatpants in his shorts while inside Walmart at 2465 Hempstead Tpke. He then left the store and was observed on Hempstead Turnpike by Third Precinct police officers.

Police said he fled when approached and officers caught up with him in the parking lot of Nassau University Medical Center. When they attempted to take him into custody, police said, a struggle occurred. Espinosa refused to place his hands behind his back, but was eventually apprehended, according to Nassau police.

The sweatpants were recovered, and the officer was treated and released from the hospital.
