Nassau homicide detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that killed a 20-year-old Hempstead man, police said Sunday.
Quavis Ford was in front of 100 Terrace Ave. about 4:23 p.m. Saturday when he was shot by an unidentified male. Ford was taken to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators have not determined a motive for the shooting and released no other details. Ford had worked on and off for the past two years at GGC Consulting Inc., in Forest Hills as an office assistant doing clerical work, said company chief executive Enrique Guevara.
Guevara said Ford had overcome difficult circumstances, including scrapes with the law, and was starting to turn his life around.
Guevara said Ford showed up in business attire looking for work at least eight times before he decided to offer the Hempstead man an unpaid internship. Guevara said he was impressed by Ford's tenacity and wanted to give him a second chance. He said Ford was learning on the job and absorbing skills to boost his resume. Ford asked for some time off from work a couple of weeks ago for personal reasons and returned last week.
"He was so happy. He said 'I'm having a baby and I want to get everything on track.' I told him to get all his things situated. He was scheduled to start full-time next Monday," Guevara said.
