Police are investigating the gunpoint robbery of a cab driver early Thursday in Hempstead.

The 32-year-old driver with Checkers Cab Co. "picked up a fare at the Freeport train station and was instructed to drive to a location in Hempstead," Nassau County police said in a news release. "The driver could not locate the street and eventually pulled onto Beverly Road."

At that point, police said, the passenger "displayed a black handgun and demanded the driver's property."

The victim, who was not injured, gave up money, a cell phone and keys to the cab, and the suspect ran off following the 3:20 a.m. robbery.

Detectives urge anyone with information about the robbery to anonymously call Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
