A wrong-way driver suffered serious injuries when he crashed into an oncoming vehicle early Friday on the Nassau Expressway in Lawrence, police said.
The 55-year-old unidentified man was driving north in southbound lanes near Rock Hall Road when his Nissan Sentra crashed into a 2003 Toyota 4Runner, Nassau homicide detectives said.
Both drivers were taken to the hospital, police said. The driver of the Toyota was treated and released.
The crash happened about 2:35 a.m. near the Atlantic Beach bridge. Authorities closed the bridge and southbound lanes of the roadway from Cedarlawn Avenue to the toll plaza until almost 1:30 p.m., police said.
The investigation is ongoing. No charges were immediately filed.
