Cops: Rikers inmate charged in Hempstead elevator attack
A man suspected of attacking a woman in an elevator at a Hempstead apartment building in April was arrested Friday at Rikers Island and charged with the vicious assault, Nassau County police said.
Daniel J. Fuentes, 26, of 50 Jackson Ave., Hempstead, was transported from the jail at Rikers to the Third Precinct in Nassau, where he was charged with second-degree attempted robbery, second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and forcible touching, police said in a Friday morning release.
Police said Fuentes also had an open bench warrant from the Hempstead police dating to May 18. He was arraigned Friday and held pending a bail of $80,000 cash or bond.
Police said that on April 20 Fuentes followed a 33-year-old woman in the elevator at a building on Fulton Avenue, "struck the victim in the head and face with a rock," pushed her against a wall -- and attempted to molest her.
When the elevator doors opened, police said the woman was able to flee -- but not before Fuentes "unsuccessfully attempted" to steal her bag.
The woman, whose identity was not released because she is a victim, suffered lacerations to her head and lip and had what police described as "numerous loose front teeth" as a result of the attack. She was treated at an area hospital, police said.
It was not immediately clear what led police to Fuentes.
